What Do Raccoons Eat?

Wondering what do raccoons eat?

These animals can be summed-up using two words
 - omnivorous and opportunistic.

Simply put, this means that these furry little critters will eat what's available at any time, whether that is meat or plants.

Now.  Of course, much of the raccoon diet will depend on the current habitat they are residing in.  In some areas plants make up a larger percentage of the food they eat.  In others, it is meat.

Examples of menu items would include...
  • acorns
  • berries
  • apples
  • corn (This is a major stable in many areas.)
  • cherries
  • wild grapes
  • persimmons
  • beech nuts
  • figs
  • peaches
  • watermelons
  • plums
  • walnuts.
  • citrus fruits
And that's just a short list of the plant foods they'll eat.  And no, it makes no difference whether it is rotten or not!  As a former Florida Wildlife Control officer and one who's been around these animals for his entire life, I speak from experience when I say they eat pretty much anything!

As far as meat goes, Raccoons consume more invertebrates than vertebrates.

Things like...
  • crayfish
  • insects
  • rodents
  • frogs
  • fish
  • bird eggs
... are all possible components of the raccoon diet.

But remember, these clever little animals are opportunistic, so while it may be a bit disgusting, they will also eat rotten, decaying animals too.  Things like road-kill or other dead carcases.  No doubt, eating this nasty, parasite ridden food causes many diseases in raccoons.  Diseases that are spread throughout your attic by their droppings when they pry their way in.

Raccoons have also adapted their list of food items to include trash and other common foods found in suburban and urban areas.
